Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 2026

Apnayan ("we", "us", "our") provides academic help, emotional check-ins, an elder companion, visit planning, medication reminders, a life-story journal, memories, games and family sharing. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. It is written to comply with Google Play's User Data policy and applicable Indian law, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

1. Information we collect

  • Account information — your name, email address, chosen role (family / student / elder) and a securely hashed password.
  • Wellbeing & health-related content you enter — mood check-ins and notes, medication names/dosages/schedules and "taken" logs, visit records, life-story journal answers, and photo memories with captions.
  • Conversations — messages you send in the AI chat (academic, emotional check-in, elder companion) and the AI's replies, stored so you can see your history.
  • Community content — group discussion posts, replies and reactions.
  • Family links — connections you create to share a loved one's wellbeing.
  • Technical data — basic session cookies needed to keep you logged in.

2. Sensitive data

Some information you choose to enter (mood, medications, health notes, emotional messages) may be sensitive. We process it only to provide the features you use, and only for as long as your account exists. We do not sell your data and we do not use it for advertising.

3. How we use your information

  • To provide and personalise the features you use.
  • To generate AI responses to your messages and read replies aloud when you ask.
  • To send reminders and family digests you have set up.
  • To keep the service secure and detect safety concerns (a keyword-based crisis check that shows helpline numbers — it does not diagnose or contact anyone automatically).

4. Third-party services (sub-processors)

To deliver AI and voice features, the content you submit for those features is sent to:

  • Anthropic (Claude) — processes your chat messages to generate replies. See Anthropic's privacy policy at anthropic.com.
  • ElevenLabs — converts reply text to natural speech when you use "Read aloud". See elevenlabs.io for their privacy terms.

These providers process data on our behalf to return a result; we do not authorise them to use your content for their own purposes.

5. Data retention

We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we permanently remove your personal data and content from our database and delete your uploaded photos, as described on our Account & Data Deletion page.

6. Your rights & choices

  • Access & correction — view and edit your content in the app, or contact us.
  • Deletion — delete your account and all associated data at any time from the Account & Data Deletion page, or by emailing us.
  • Read-aloud & language — you control the voice, mute and language from Settings.

7. Children

Apnayan is intended for use by families and adults. Where a student account is used by a minor, it should be set up and supervised by a parent or guardian.

8. Security

Passwords are stored using industry-standard hashing, connections should be served over HTTPS, and access to your data requires you to be logged in. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

9. Not a medical service

Apnayan offers companionship, learning and organisational support. It is not a medical, psychiatric or emergency service and does not replace professional care. In an emergency, contact your local emergency number.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
